Dave and I were looking for a quick lunch in downtown Victoria, and after some quick online research, we chose Baan Thai on Blanchard. I love it when online reviews deliver what was promised (that’s one of the reasons why we blog ourselves).
When we arrived in the restaurant, we were really surprised by the beautiful decor. Light wood everywhere, little gold buddhas and a nice zen feel. We chose a couple of items from the lunch menu, which both came with a simple bowl of soup (kind of like cabbage soup) to start. On a cold and rainy day, the soup and the delicious green tea we also ordered really warmed us up in a good way.
Dave ordered the “L3” special – Gai Pad Khing. The gingered chicken sautéed with black mushrooms, onion, red and green peppers and celery was very fresh and aromatic. It was also served with jasmine rice and two crispy spring rolls (with a sweet dipping sauce). Dave really enjoyed his lunch, but I think he was eyeing my dish because his was not as spicy as he usually chooses.
I chose the “A” special – Gaeng Gai. I love coconut curry and this was nice and spicy and creamy. This dish was made with coconut milk and red curry paste, bamboo shoots (surprisingly tender), sweet basil leaves and lemon grass. I loved this dish!!
Baan Thai serves incredibly tasty Thai food, at a really reasonable price (both our dishes were just under $10 each). You can always tell how good a place is when it is packed for lunch by locals – and this place was very busy and filled with non-tourists (except us)! Highly recommended!
