The last time we were in Negril two years ago, we had a great dinner at the Blue Mahoe at the Spa Resort in Negril. Now that we’ve been back again, it’s officially become one of our favourites.
The moment you walk into the restaurant, you are struck by the beauty of the blue mahoe wood inside and with the lovely seating arrangements outside. We were so happy to sit outside again and enjoy the Jamaican evening. It was a bit windy, but it died down just as we were about to eat. Perfect timing!
We started our evening with a couple of drinks. I had seen many ladies drinking a dirty banana (like a banana flavoured pina colada), so I tried it tonight. It was good, but pretty heavy to go with dinner. David enjoyed his rum punch as well.
The star of our last dinner at Blue Mahoe was the starter of coconut shrimp, so we just had to get it again. It did not disappoint! The shrimp were so big, we needed to cut them with a knife! The coconut coating paired with the fresh ginger dip were divine.
After much deliberation, I chose the shrimp pot for my dinner. The shrimp is slowly cooked with curry, rice and vegetables, and comes served over a low flame. Perfect deep complex flavour.
David chose something very Jamaican – braised oxtail. Watching him eat the bony pieces of meat made me happy I didn’t choose it. But, he loved the super tender meat with a dark stew. And, he raved about the fav beans that went with it.
We didn’t want the dinner to end, so we went for a mango creme brûlée dessert. The mango custard gave it a real island feel, and was firmer than a traditional custard.
Overall, we were once again thrilled with Blue Mahoe, and will definitely be back again the next time we head to Negril (because there will be a next time)!
