Dave and I are big Indian cuisine fans, and we’ve been dying to try the (fairly) new Caraway Grill since it opened here in Regina at 1625 Broad Street. After arriving too late to get a seat a few Saturday nights ago, we got there early (5 p.m.) on this Saturday night and were seated right away. We did notice a lot of reserved seats, so obviously the place is popular (always a very good sign).
The decor is minimal and the seating is sparse. We soon learned that all the love goes into the food. It was a fantastic meal.
Naan bread is a given at any Indian restaurant, and we chose the garlic naan to accompany our meal. The bread was very fresh (the right amount of crisp on the outside and softness on the inside). I especially loved the fresh garlic sprinkled on top.
The surprise of the night for us was the Mutter Paneer. This creamy curry dish with mutter (peas) and paneer (cubed cottage cheese) was a delight. It had smooth but complex curry flavour that we were raving about all night. Best Mutter Paneer we have ever had.
We love Chana Masala and order it whenever we have a chance. This version was darker in colour and more complex in flavour than we have experienced before. It seemed to have a deeper cinnamon note, and we really enjoyed it.
Finally, another of our favourites, we chose the rice dish of Lamb Biryani. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the basmati rice was nicely seasoned. I think we prefer it a bit more on the creamy side, but this biryani went perfectly with our other choices and sauces.
While we ordered a lot of food, we mopped up every last morsel with our naan bread and have vowed to return again. It was an absolutely delicious experience. Caraway Grill also offers take out and delivery, so check out their website for details.
