David is usually the animal whisperer in our relationship. Wherever we go, he has a way with dogs and cats, Especially cats. They just walk right up to him and love getting pets from him.
I must have been channelling his energy this trip, because I was really drawn to the stray dogs in Argentina and Chile, and felt that they were drawn to me (for a change). First of all, the dogs here are obviously cared for. The dogs may be wild, but local people clearly provide for them (whether it be food or cardboard down on the street as a makeshift bed). And, they know tourists will likely give them some love and some food if they are sweet. I found most of them to be very sweet.
I couldn’t resist hanging out with them at our photo stops, and this was noticed by my travel mates Sue and Betty. At one stop in Calafate, there wasn’t a dog around for me to pet, and at Sue’s suggestion Betty brought me a rock to pet (thinking I may be a bit lonely). Priceless!
Here are a few of the lovely dogs (and one fox and one cat) that made my heart smile.
