My habibi and tour guide Walid (right)

I met some great people on my trip to Egypt… incluing my egyptian tour guide Walid who started every day asking me, “how are you today, habibi?”

Habibi (hah-bee-bee) is an Arabic word that literally means my beloved, but is commonly used as a substitute for friend or my darling.

I love this word, and the sweetness of basically calling a good friend “darling” … I’ve started greeting a lot of my good friends as “habibi” since I’ve been back home, and some of them are even starting to say it back.

It always brings a smile to my face.
