What an epic day in Bariloche! I am so glad that I brushed aside my travel fatigue to sign up for a horse back riding excursion in the lake district around Bariloche.

After a short bus ride trip of about a half hour, we arrived at a pristine spot. A gorgeous little inlet, with a fantastic view and fresh water (like glass it was so calm). Apparently, it is so clean here, you can drink right from the lake.

We met our guide for the day – Nicolaus – and he walked us to the stables to pick out our horses. I have only been on a horse a couple of times in my life, and many many years ago, so I was a little bit nervous and really had no idea what to do. Nicolaus explained that the horses know within minutes if you are an experienced rider or not, and if you are not – they go slow. Needless to say, my lovely horse Promifero went very slow (he is the brown horse on the right).

We heard that the weather we experienced today was truly special – sunshine, no wind and a warm 20+ celsius. It made the two hour treck really spectacular. We went through streams and rock and forest and clearings and hills – it really did feel like an adventure. The two hours went by in a heartbeat – I loved every minute of it! I am in the mint green coat in the picture below.

It was great to be in a small group, because in high season these tours can be up to 30 people/horses. Again, we are very lucky! The dogs that ran around us and followed us the entire time have a great live, and were pretty tuckered out after all the fun!

We knew that lunch came after the ride, and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meal. It started with a fresh salad and a beef empanada, and was followed by amazing chorizo… and then rounds and rounds of meat! Our driver was also our server, and he doesn’t speak english. Thankfully, a lovely German tourist joined us on this trip and she was able to do some translating for us. Every time we thought we must be done, he came out with yet another plate of beef until we pleaded “no mas, por favour!”

As we lounged after our lunch, and enjoyed the view and some homemade ice cream, I noticed some ducks with chicks nearby – a really perfect ending to a perfect day. How lucky am I??
