There are mountains around here somewhere??!! Not the usual sight driving into Canmore that David and I are used to, with forest fires bringing a lot of smoke into the area from the US.
Usually, you can see the mountains as Calgary nears the horizon, and certainly you see and feel them all around you in the beautiful rocky mountain town of Canmore. As we walked around town this time, we could barely make out an outline of a mountain through the smoke.
We also saw a terrible accident on the other side of the highway near Canmore – a very banged up van and a jack-knifed semi that had crossed the middle ditch into oncoming traffic. It really spooked me, and backed up traffic for miles heading into Calgary.
We loved our flatbreads this time around – I had ground beef and tomatoes and green peppers on mine, and dave had genoa salami and carmelized onions on his. The local craft beers were also terrific after such a long drive.
We had a good night at the Holiday Inn Canmore, and we are on our way to Penticton today, and expect there will be smoke most of the way – so thankfully we have seen the beautiful views a few times before.
