David and I have wonderful memories of our Joy Road Al Fresco Dinner two years ago… it’s where we got engaged. We knew we needed to head back to God’s Mountain Estate for another special dinner during this trip.
Joy Road Catering does special family-style dinners at the estate every Thursday night during summer. They also partner with a different local winery each night to feature and pair wines with each dish. The table and the venue are spectacular – especially as the sun goes down and the light switches to a pink sky. It’s stunning and feels very special.
We begin the night admiring the view, and enjoying two appetizers – mussels with prosciuitto and heirloom tomato, and a rosemary bread. Delicious and a wonderful start!
We are joined by about 50 people for this dinner, and led to the beautiful table. Dana Ewert welcomes us all, and introduces each dish… her passion for these dinners is evident and we always enjoy how she explains the courses. We start with lovely salad, fresh radishes, and some wild salmon. We know we are in for another special night.
This time around, it is Tantalus winery that is pairing their wines with each dish. Having just visited Tantalus for the first time in the Kelowna area on this trip, it was great fun to try each of their wines.
The next course was my absolute favourite of the night. It was a beautiful soup of lobster mushrooms, squash blossoms and freshly shucked corn in a rich broth. The most amazing local ingredients made this relatively simple dish really stand out. Love!
Our main course was a mix of a number of fantastic dishes – braised duck legs and smoked duck breast with prunes, lentils with beets, charcoal eggplant, and a nicoise salad with tomatoes, potatoes and olives. It is always fun to pass around all of the dishes as everyone at the table gets a taste of everything on their plate.
Finally, dessert was a nectarine and strawberry Eton Mess – the perfect fresh and light ending to a fabulous dinner!
David and I really enjoyed this outstanding dinner again, and of course reminisced about our special dinner two years ago. This dinner will always be in our plans every time we visit this area in summer!
