One of the great things about staying near old Nice, is the chance to stumble upon something great tucked away in a small street. That’s what happened when we spied Le Frog, just off the Place Massena.
First, we were drawn in by the name. Then, we thought the lunch special looked great (and a great price at 15 Euro each).
We were seated inside, and it took us a while to adjust to french vs the spanish we have been trying out the past few days in Barcelona. I said “si” a couple of times, embarrassingly. Once we got the menu sorted, we chose the special of a starter and a main, with a glass of red wine on the side.
When our starters arrived, we realized quickly we weren’t in Spain anymore! The portion was much larger than we expected! The salad Nicoisse was wonderful (and just what you hope for in Nice). Delicious tuna, olives and other goodies in a fantastic tasting salad. we also really enjoyed the sardine and cheese tartin on the plate.
After our starter, David made a new friend of Spicy the dog… who was accompanying a lovely french couple during their meal.
Our main dishes arrived, and again, it was much larger than we expected! I chose the beef stew, which was just what you would expect from a french dish – deep in flavour with an interesting kick of orange. It came with gnocchi, which David has learned originated in Nice.
David chose the roasted pork with gravy and potatoes – I could not believe the size of his two slices of pork! He enjoyed every last bite, and then helped finish off my stew.
Le Frog was a great find for us, and really helped us see the difference in culture and flavour that we are going to experience here (more fine dining and formal). This restaurant was an absolute bargain for the portions and the taste!
