After receving a rave review of Pagliacci’s (in particular the foccacia bread), I was intent on making it one of our dinners during our time in Victoria. Perhaps my expectations were a bit too high. Although I enjoyed the dinner and ambience at this restaurant on Broad Street in Victoria, it was just ok for me.
I do have to point out that apparently we visited on a night where a new menu and a new ordering system was just installed. It caused some hiccups at ordering (the new tablets seemed slow and by the end of our dinner, the servers had going back to pen and paper and were then transferring them to the tablets in the back). That said, we still received our meals fairly quickly and it didn’t interfere with our service overall.
I really liked the old-school interiors in the fairly small restaurant. It has that classic Italian restaurant feel with some lovely murals on the wall. And, it’s a fun atmosphere with all the menu items having movie names or movie quotes.
All meals start with an order of foccacia bread on the table. After hearing how amazing this bread was, I think I was expecting more (perhaps an olive oil dip?). It was tasty and pretty dense with a parmesan sprinkle on top… but it wasn’t a stand out for me.
My first salad course arrived – a Caesar salad that was a little heavy on the creamy dressing and a lot heavy on the garlic! Dave and I shared this salad, because if one of us is going to down a ton of garlic, we both have to (that’s the rule)! I personally liked the garlic, but I can see how it might be a bit much for others.
I chose an option off the daily specials list – “Jaws” – BC Halibut with linguine in a lemon dill sauce, with fresh vegetables. I loved the fish, it had a really nice sear on it and the lemon dill sauce was yummy. My only complaint was that there wasn’t enough of the sauce.
Dave chose “The Thin Man” Chicken with marsala cream sauce, prosciutto and mushrooms. The servings are huge here, and Dave really enjoyed the chicken and the massive amount of crispy prosciutto on top (Dave always says things are better with bacon)!
Pagliacci’s is a nice family restaurant where you get a lot for what you pay for. As we walked out, Dave and I commented that it was good and we enjoyed our meal – I think we just feel like we’ve had that type of meal many times before.
