I love it when you are travelling and stumble upon a wonderful town that you weren’t expecting to be so wonderful. That is how I feel about Puerto Varas.
After such a long travel day (that didn’t feel long at all), we arrived in Puerto Varas. It has only been a town since the late 1800s, as local people were nervous about living so close to three volcanoes! German settlers built this place, and you can see it and feel it in the architecture.
The town truly is in the shadow of three volcanoes – Puntiagudo, Osrono and Calbuco. Calbuco was the volcano that erupted in April 2015, but the wind was going away from Puerto Varas so it sustained really no damage.
I think my favourite thing about this town is the beautiful statue of a woman, with arms outstretched to the sky and to the volcanoes. I just stood and looked at her forever. Very powerful and beautiful image for me.
