On our previous trips to the Okanagan, David and I have stayed in Canmore at the half way point on our drive. This time around we stayed in downtown Calgary and it provided great opportunities for walks in Prince’s Island Park – where we found the delightful River Cafe!

We had a nightcap at River Cafe on the way to Kelowna, and were so impressed we came for dinner on our way home. While we weren’t able to be seated on the great patio, we were seated right by open windows inside and enjoyed the park and refreshing breeze (we think this was even better than being outside). The service was exceptional all night as well.



It was fun for us to see a Meyer Pinot Noir from the Okanagan on the menu (where we had just visited and picked up a couple of bottles to take home), and we bought a bottle to enjoy with our meal.

We began sharing a beautiful dish of side stripe shrimp with kohlrabi, smoked aioli, ponzu, chili and cilantro. This was almost too pretty to eat, and was light and refreshing – really lovely.


I chose the Haida Gwaii Halibut for my entree, with a mussel and salumi vinaigrette, campo beans and sea asparagus. It was delicious!


David really enjoyed his entree – the special for the night – a 9 ounce pork chop with fiddleheads, oyster mushrooms and a maple jus.


We were enjoying the evening so much that we ordered a light dessert of Okanagan cherries and wild mint mousse, with shortbread and cocoa nibs. A fantastic way to end a delicious and relaxing dinner!


River Cafe is a new favourite for David and I, and we will be sure to return to it the next time we visit Calgary.
