The winter that never ends. The spring that never came. Whatever you call it… the weather really sucks around here right now. It’s been that way for a really, REALLY long time. I needed something that reminds me that this is supposed to be spring. We don’t have fresh strawberries in spring but this drink makes me think of spring anyway.

Strawberry gin cocktail.

I was flipping through the food section of Flipboard and I saw the recipe for the Strawberry Gin Smash Cocktail. The pictures were lovely and reminded me of the spring that I have yet to experience. I made one (pictured above) pretty close to the recipe except I added mint. The second one was a little different (partly because we ran low on gin by that point). I added a couple things and muddled the strawberries a little bit more and I think it turned out pretty good. Try it at home and let me know what you think.

Makes 1 Strawberry Gin Smash

Ingredients:

3 fresh strawberries
1 1/2 oz gin
1 1/2 oz vodka
splash of Cointreau liqueur
lime wedge
sugar cube
2 mint leaves
2 dashes Angostura bitters
splash of soda water
ice

Preparation:

Put the sugar cube in an old fashioned glass and add a couple dashes of Angostura bitters. Throw in the lime wedge and mint leaves and muddle. Slice two of the strawberries and muddle a little more. Add the gin, vodka and Cointreau. Cover with ice and top off with soda water. Make a small cut in the bottom of the last strawberry and place on the side of the glass for garnish.
