It’s our final night of our west coast trip, and we are spending the night back in Canmore, Alberta. We want something special and settle on Tapas Restaurant. We love tapas, and we love spanish wine, so we figured we’d like the experience. Wonderfully, Tapas exceeded our expectations and delivered some brilliant and suprising flavour combinations we absolutely loved!

First, let’s start with the ambience. I loved the spanish music set at just the right volume, and our seating outside to enjoy the late summer weather (especially great after a long road trip day in the car). We were also very impressed with the service. We had a great time with both of our servers (yes, two – we had a great waiter and waitress taking care of us throughout our meal, so we were always topped with wine, water and chances to order more off the menu). They were both very friendly and helpful explaining we could order what we wanted, when we wanted, with a menu left behind at our table. That helped us check how our stomachs and tastebuds were feeling throughout the meal. It also made our choices a lot of fun! We love tapas and sharing.

We began our meal with mixed olives – an interesting taste of roasted olives, marinated with orange, rosemary and garlic infused olive oil I love the roasted taste mixed with a fruity freshness. A perfect starter paired with our choice of a spanish rioja red wine.

Next, we moved on to the Tomato Tartar – a visually stunning dish matched in light fresh flavour. The mix of fresh and sun dried tomatoes, red onions and basil, with a side of gorgeous tapenade was wonderful with the baguette slices provided. It looked exactly like tartar dishes I have seen in france (only a vegetarian version here). Lovely.

We then moved on to hot tapas. Dave and I love chili flakes, so we chose the Chili Gambas – prawns sautéed with chili cream sauce. What a wonderful dish! The prawns were huge and perfectly cooked, and the cream sauce was just the right amount of heat (mild to medium) and wonderfully creamy. Our attentive server brought us extra bread to soak up every last lick of that wonderful sauce!

Finally, we ordered our two final hot tapas dishes of the night. The Haddock was served in three pieces, perfectly cooked (again), over large garlic potatoes with a tomato basil lemon sauce and prosciutto ham. Again, totally loved it.

Our last dish was our favourite, because the taste was so new to us and surprising. The Lamb Lollipops were four little marinated and grilled lamb chops, served with a maple rosemary glaze. Oh my god, the maple glaze was to die for and was a perfect accompaniment to the lamb. We are still raving about that one, as we have never thought of putting those flavours together.

Tapas Restaurant in Canmore was a wonderful little romantic restaurant that was a perfect end to our vacation. If we are ever back this way again, we will definitely visit again and we highly recommend it. Compliments to the Chef!
