I have a great friend travelling with me on this visit to Toronto, and he never misses a chance to dine at the Old York Bar and Grill. He described it as a great “hole in the wall” neighbourhood restaurant outside of the downtown core at 167 Niagara Street. The biggest reason he visits is to pick up bottles of the house Modo’s pepper sauce to take home – a spicy and truly original carribean hot sauce.
I didn’t find it a hole in the wall. It is dark, but the service and food are fantastic.
I chose a wonderful dish of lentil and squash tacos with crispy chick peas, crime freche and feta. It was full of flavour and really satisfying.
My travel mates chose the burger and ribs – each really big proportions, and really reasonable prices.
I really loved this place – it was fun to get out of the busy part of Toronto to a place with more of a neighbourhood feel. And trust me, that hot sauce is worth the trip!
